All About the 21-Day Sugar Detox - Pt. 1
As many of you know, this summer I became a 21-Day Sugar Detox coach. It has been a pleasure supporting groups through this fun and rewarding nutrition challenge. I am gearing up to run another group in January 2018 and I would love for you to be a part of it!
Over the next three weeks, I will be bringing you a series of blog posts giving you MORE information about the program. I want you to be able to make an informed decision about how you choose will tackle your health goals in the new year.
So this week's post covers some basic information about the detox - what it is, what you eat and whether or not the 21DSD would be a good fit for you.
What is the 21-Days Sugar Detox anyway?
The 21-Day Sugar Detox is a real, whole foods based nutrition challenge designed to reduce and/or eliminate your cravings for sugars and carbohydrates.
The program was created by Diane Sanfilippo, a Certified Nutrition Consultant and New York Times best-selling author of Practical Paleo.
This 3-week sugar detox works to change not only the foods you eat but also your habits around food and the way your palate reacts to sweet foods. The goal of the detox is to support your body in naturally cleansing itself of substances that create negative health. To detox from sugar means not only to rid yourself of the cravings for it, but also to rid your daily life of the structure built around being a slave to sugar.
Liberation from the physical desire for sugar and the freedom to live life without sugar cravings – that’s the goal of The 21-Day Sugar Detox.
Is this to say that you will never eat sugar again? Of course not.
The program is great in that it gives you tools and strategies for navigating “real life” after the program while maintaining the new habits you have established. By freeing yourself of the “I need sugar-NOW!” mentality, you can make more mindful decisions about when to (or not to) indulge.
What do you eat while on the program?
Simple: real, whole foods that will nourish your body and make you feel amazing! On the 21DSD you will be eating lots of quality protein, healthy fats, and good carbs – unlimited amounts of crunchy and leafy vegetables, selected fruits, nuts and seeds, and some starchier vegetables like beets and squash.
Take a look at some example plates:
The Three Levels
There are 3 program levels and special modifications for athletes, pregnant & nursing moms, pescetarians and autoimmunity.
Take a look at the “Yes/No” foods list for level one.
Level one is great for those who are new to whole foods eating or have never done a nutrition challenge like this before. Level one includes protein, vegetables, some starchy veggies, nuts and seeds, selected fruits (one piece a day of either a green tipped banana, green apple or grapefruit), unlimited full fat dairy, and half a cup of whole grains daily.
Level two includes dairy but no grains. And level three is a “strict paleo” template, so no dairy and no grains.
What is off limits?
Sugar – obviously. This means no white sugar, cane sugar, coconut sugar, or brown sugar. And no natural sweeteners either – no maple syrup, honey, molasses, or agave. And no artificial sweeteners or stevia while on the detox. Fruit is also off the table, except for lemons and limes, and your choice of one of either a green apples, green tipped banana or grapefruit per day.
How do I know if the program is right for me?
If you answer “YES!” to any of the following questions then you would be a great candidate for the 21-Day Sugar Detox.
Do you crave sugar all day every day? Foods like candy, desserts, chocolate, or lots of fruit?
What about carbohydrates? Do you crave bread, pasta, rice, pastries, cereal or oatmeal, sandwiches and wraps or breakfast bars?
Do you experience dips or spikes in your energy levels throughout the day?
And do you find yourself reaching for the “emergency chocolates” or dried mango to keep you going at 3pm?
Are you usually tired when you wake up in the morning?
Do you consume alcohol daily or a couple times a week?
Are you trying to burn body fat?
Does the way you eat leave you feeling hungry, unsatisfied, and nibbling on snacks every 2-3 hours?
Are you following a low-fat, whole-grain-rich diet that just isn’t working?
Do you follow a clean-eating type lifestyle but still experience sugar and carb cravings?
The program is also right for you if:
You want to get a jump start on your weight loss goals, reduce inflammation, manage diabetes, clear skin conditions, and/or get a handle on emotional eating and mindless snacking.
You are ready to commit yourself to choosing foods that will support your health goals and help you feel amazing!
Intuitively, you know that eating real, whole food is the best thing you can do for your health.
You are ready to play in the kitchen and make simple, delicious meals for yourself.
You know that the answer to your sugar cravings isn’t a magic pill, potion, shake or a handful of supplements!
You are looking to establish new healthy habits and a long-term lifestyle change.
That's it for today! I hope this post was both helpful and informative. Did you learn something new about the 21DSD? Do you think this nutrition challenge would be a good fit for you and your health goals in the new year? Not convinced yet?
Stay tuned next week for more information about the program and how you can register to be in my group! Pssst. I have a promotion coming your way soon!
Have a beautiful week, Lovelies. Talk again soon!
